Firebirds fall to Colorado Eagles 2-1 in competitive matchup
COACHELLA VALLEY, Calif. (KESQ) – The Coachella Valley Firebirds lost in a close game to the Colorado Eagles 2-1, in a matchup head coach Derek Laxdal believes they could've easily won.
"It was a 2-1 game and could have been 2-1 for us, 2-1 for them, but I really like the way our guys battled, competed tonight," Laxdal said. "We made a couple of mistakes on the penalty kill and that ended up in our net, and we didn't strike on the powerplay. And, that's the difference in the game plain and simple."
Logan Morrison netted the first goal for the Firebirds and for the game in the first period. Just over 10 minutes later at 18:52 the Eagles tied the score with a shot through defenders from Alex Barré-Boulet.
The second period was scoreless as the teams were even matched offensively. They stayed nearly even throughout the game with shots on goal, as the Firebirds finished with 30 and the Eagles had 27.
Jason Polin had the final goal the game in the third period at 4:35. After that the Firebirds were unable to net a shot and fell to the Eagles. Colorado is ranked No. 2 in the Pacific Division and Coachella Valley is ranked No. 4. Key standing they'll each fight to keep in the last few months to have home-rink advantage in the playoffs.
