Firebirds earn first win of season 6-2 against Ontario Reign

COACHELLA VALLEY, Calif. (KESQ) – The Coachella Valley Firebirds have earned their first win of the season against the Ontario Reign. The Firebirds bounced back from a 6-5 loss on Friday to the rival Reign with a 6-2 win on the road on Saturday.

Many of the Firebirds had historic play to mark the second game of the season. Jani Nyman, who has already reached five goals this season, recorded his first career AHL hat trick. Tyson Jugnauth also breaking records for Coachella Valley with a franchise high four assists.

Nyman opened scoring at Toyota Arena at 3:24 of the first period. His goal came by converting on the power play off assists from Jagger Firkus and Jugnauth. Nyman's second goal came just a few minutes later at 11:17 for 2-1. His final goal for the night capped off the third period 6-2 for an empty net goal.

Firkus also has a multi-goal game for the Firebirds. He scored twice in the second period, at 1:19 and 19:24, quickly extending Coachella Valley's lead 4-2.

Coachella Valley outshot the Reign, 31-30, and finished 3-for-4 on the power play. Firebirds goaltender Victor Östman stopped 28 of 30 shots to help bring them a victory.
