The Living Desert mourns the loss of beloved cheetah, Kali

PALM DESERT, CALIF. (KESQ) - The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is mourning the loss of Kali, a beloved 12-year-old cheetah who was compassionately euthanized last week after being diagnosed with kidney failure and a large mass in her skull.

The Living Desert announced the loss on social media, saying Kali's health began declining in recent weeks, with caregivers noticing increased thirst, reduced appetite, and possible neurological symptoms. Following a CT scan and consultation with her veterinary and animal care teams, the decision was made to prevent further suffering and protect her quality of life.

Born October 1, 2014, Kali arrived at The Living Desert in 2016 from Fossil Rim Wildlife Center with her sisters, Bela and Sudi. Known for her confident, curious personality, she became a favorite among caregivers and guests.

Elizabeth Hiner, Assistant Animal Care Curator, remembered Kali as a special animal who always recognized her caregivers and gave her full attention to anything that caught her eye. She described Kali as an inspiration to guests and a beautiful ambassador for her species.

The zoo reports that Kali's sister Sudi is doing well, eating normally and interacting with her care team. She will continue receiving enrichment and expert care.

Kali will be remembered by the staff and visitors who had the privilege of knowing her. The Living Desert is inviting the community to share their memories in the comments of its social media announcement.
