Street vendors and Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce donate food for medical workers

A group of local businesses and the Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce came together to support healthcare workers on the frontlines in the fight against coronavirus.

At JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio Sunday, volunteers unloaded hundreds of breakfast burritos, salads and drinks.

"I felt it important to give back. I’ve been hearing a lot of them are working long shifts, long hours without eating, so I know you can’t pull that many hours without eating," said Anthony Rojas.

He's a street food vendor, who helped put together a team of about 30 volunteers with other local businesses to make and donate the food. A number of food vendors donated ingredients.

Together, they form the group, "Coachella Valley Strong."

"We’re all friends, we’re all here to support each other and whenever somebody needs something we’re here to lend our help," said Linh Young, one of the volunteers.

They delivered 300 burritos, 100 salads, and 40 gallons of lemonade, and that's just one of their stops. They also made drops to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs and the federal medical station at the county fairgrounds in Indio.

"I just hope it means that they know the community is behind them," Rojas said. "They’re here for us when we need them, so I want them to know we’re here whenever they need us as well."

It's giving people a way to be productive during tough times: uniting behind the valley's healthcare heros.

"People want to do something; they don’t know what to do and this was a great opportunity for people to come together and be able to help whatever way they can," Young said.
