Heat and humidity: the signs to watch out for as pets become more prone to heat exhaustion

Temperatures continue to linger in the triple digits throughout the Coachella Valley, making for extremely dangerous conditions. Not only are humans more susceptible to getting heat exhaustion, but so are pets.

"We believe that if people knew better most of them would do better," Loving All Animals adoption counselor, Janet McAfee said.

The organization is located on 51st Avenue and Calhoun Street in Coachella. It advocates for animal welfare while helping dogs and cats find their forever home. McAfee urged pet owners to keep their animals indoors during this time of year.

"I always tell people try to imagine how you would feel if you had to stay outdoors right now 24-7."

Even if a pet is given water or stays in the shade, the consequences could be fatal.

"The problem is that dogs don’t have the same sweat glands as people," said McAfee.

If you have to go outside McAfee said use your common sense. Test your hand against the pavement-- if it's too hot, it probably will be the same for your pet's paws.

One potential solution could be pet booties, at least to walk on hot pavement.

"Paw protectors are a good idea if your dog is walking on hot pavement. The only problem is many dogs don’t like them and they’re going to pull them off. Our advice to people is don’t walk your dog when it's hot," said McAfee.

If you must take your pet outside, try to do it in the early morning or later at night when temperatures are relatively cooler.

If you don't want a pet on the carpet, find an area such as a laundry room or a somewhere that gives your pet shelter outside of the extreme heat. Keep your pet hydrated, and try to use ice cubes to cool their water when possible.
