Man pleads not guilty in Banning murder case
A 20-year-old Beaumont man accused in the death of a Banning woman pleaded not guilty today to murder and child endangerment charges.
Devonta Eugene Leonard remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail and is due back in court April 5 for a felony settlement conference.
The victim’s body was found about 10 a.m. Feb. 20 in a Banning residence in the 500 block of North Hathaway Street. Officers went to the scene after receiving “several reports of a possible dead body at the location.”
The woman’s name and age were being withheld by police, but the criminal complaint identifies her as Evangelina Y. The child endangerment charge involves a 4-year-old girl identified only as Jane Doe.
Leonard’s relationship, if any, to the woman and the girl was not disclosed by police, who also did not specify the cause of death. However, the criminal complaint filed against Leonard includes a gun use enhancement.
