Firefighters help rescue ill hiker off trail near Whitewater

Cal Fire, Riverside County firefighters have rescued an ill hiker off the Pacific Crest Trail near Whitewater.

A Cal Fire battalion chief at the scene told us a male adult hiker was flown off the trail just before 10 a.m. after he complained about back and stomach pain. He was then taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

A woman who was with the male hiker was able to safely return to her hotel in Idyllwild.

Authorities said they received a call of an injured hiker on the trail near Snow Creek Road, south of Highway 111, around 7 a.m. Firefighters set up an incident command post in the area while they located the man.

Officials said the man was in stable condition and alert when they rescued him.
