Local class at John Glenn Middle School gets $500 for books

Congratulations to Ms. Tra-My Hollod’s eighth-grade class at John Glenn Middle School in Indio for receiving the March ‘One Class at a Time’ award to buy new class novels.

Ms. Hollod holds reading to the highest regard.

“I like to see a book, smell the book, see the pages, use a bookmark,” she said. Nowadays, books are not always the go-to, though.

“For me listening to Tra-my talk about the issue, we all spend so much time on our cell phones,” Walter Clark of the Walter Clark Legal Group said.

And Ms. Hollod says this is an issue.

“Right now at their age, it’s 4-5 hours of screen time. Tablet, phone, computer, video games, 4-5 hours,” she said.

Now, with this $500 from the Walter Clark Legal Group, “We do three class novels a year where the entire class reads the same novel. I’d like students to be able to hold and read the books in class,” Ms. Hollod said.

The students seem to agree and want more books as well.

“There’s something about being able to touch a book and see it. It’ll be easier to concentrate when I have a book open as opposed to just looking at it on the screen,” eighth-grader Allyson Frisbie said.

“I’m proud of Mr. Walter Clark because that’s something that inspires students,” eight grader Natalie Vazquez said.
