Hundreds of policymakers gather in Indian Wells for SCAG Conference

More than 900 policymakers and local leaders from across Southern California will be in Indian Wells today for the 53rd annual Regional Conference and General Assembly of the Southern California Association of Governments.

The two-day conference, titled “Southern California at a Crossroads,” will feature panels, presentations and demonstrations aimed at finding ways local governments can utilize the latest technologies to enhance mobility and overall quality of life in their cities.

Emerging trends such as the rise of online shopping, meeting greenhouse gas reduction goals with new transportation technologies and a dearth of affordable housing will be among the topics discussed Thursday and Friday at the Renaissance Indian Wells Resort & Spa.

Talithia Williams, a data expert and co-host of the Public Broadcasting Service series NOVA Wonders, will deliver a keynote address on data-based problem solving, while famed seismologist Lucy Jones will be among a panel of experts discussing what can be done to safeguard cities and utilities against potential major natural disasters.

“This is a time of transition and change — commuters are spending over 100 hours a year stuck in traffic and we have a severe housing affordability crisis,” said SCAG President Margaret Finlay. “Bringing together experts and leaders from across Southern California allows us to share knowledge and move new solutions forward.”

The conference will also include the presentation of the 2018 SCAG Sustainability Awards, which recognizes transportation and infrastructure projects within SCAG’s six-county region that “best exemplify the core principles of sustainability,” according to SCAG.
