I-10 pavement project to last 12 months

Caltrans is going to work on a re-paving project along Interstate 10 between Monterey and Jefferson Street that will be slowing down drivers here in the valley at night.

Caltrans said at least two lanes are expected to be closed every night from 9 PM until 6 AM. The multi-million dollar project started last week and is expected to last about 12 months.

“I drove on it today and it seems really smooth and I’m glad that our roads are improving,” said Kathy Gamboa, a driver from Corona.

According to Caltrans, the $10.6 million project was awarded to CalMex engineering with the goal to preserve and improve existing pavement on the freeway.

“The infrastructure that they’re putting in all the new homes and new businesses, I would think that they would need to improve the highway infrastructure as well. But, then I can sympathize with the people who have to deal with this, I’m lucky I don’t have to,” Gamboa said.

Vip Kapoor isn’t so lucky. He travels to the valley from Temecula and back every day, passing through the freeway as construction begins.

“I understand they’re putting tax dollars to work and they’re fixing up the roads, I just think planning could have been better. They know the traffic and they know up until about 10, 11 o clock this freeway is pretty busy,” Kapoor said.

Caltrans is asking motorists to be patient..and reminding people of construction zone safety tips, like stay alert (avoid distractions), expect delays (plan for delays), and allow for ample space between cars.

Caltrans is working on the roadways in phases, for up to the minute information on the progress of the project click here.

The pavement project is expected to be complete by 2019.
