Woman caught on camera stealing packages from Indio home in gated community

An Indio homeowner is concerned about the safety of her neighborhood after having packages stolen right from in front of her house Wednesday afternoon. The homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous, sent along surveillance footage captured at 4:08 p.m. yesterday of a woman with dark hair wearing a dark shirt, blue jeans, sunglasses and dark sneakers snatching two packages in broad daylight.

“It has been happening a lot lately,” the homeowner said. “This is also happening in the communities around us as well and we are all gated communities. So that does not deter them…I mean now these people have my name and address connected to these packages. That makes me feel uneasy.”

The homeowner also said that she doesn’t want to feel like her family has to “constantly watch [their] backs,” and that she is concerned about the safety of her children.

The packages contained coffee and had filters for a fan used to alleviate asthma. All told, the estimated value of the packages was around $150.

The theft took place in the Mountain Estates gated community near Avenue 42 and Calhoun St. in North Indio. The homeowner reported the crime to the Indio Police Department and got in touch with the coffee company, who will be sending along a replacement package. She is still waiting to hear back from Amazon.

She also reached out to her Homeowners Association, who sent her along this email:

Thank you for your email. I understand your frustration for the theft and wishing to find the thief, I encourage you to utilize some type of social media to distribute the photo. We are unable to send this to the community through emails we have collected. There has been a rise in theft in North Indio communities and the Board is actively pursuing solutions to prevent or limit access to the community, working with the Indio Police Department for added patrols and getting homeowners interested in neighborhood watch. Again, thank you for your email.

Anyone with information relating to this theft is urged to contact the Indio Police Department at 760-391-4057.
