Beaumont High School welcomes 200 students from 4 district for Special Olympics

The Special Olympics has grown greatly since its inception in 1968. In 2018, the organization helps facilitate the events for 4.4 million athletes across 170 countries. And on April 27, the world’s largest sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities came to Beaumont High School to continue to spread its incredible mission.

The Special Olympics’ Southern California charitable wing partnered with Beaumont Unified School District, Banning Unified School District, San Jacinto Unified, and Yucaipa-Calimesa Unified School District to bring the event to the region for the second straight year.

“We are always looking to include our special education students into the culture of our school, especially with our extracurricular activities,” said Christina Pierce, Principal at Beaumont High School. “Special Olympics Southern California is an incredible organization, and after finding out schools have partnered with them to host their own Special Olympics events, I knew we needed to join forces and bring this program to our area school communities.”

The Beaumont High School sports complex welcomed more than 200 special athletes from the four partnered districts for a day packed with events like the 50M wheelchair race, standing long jump, and tennis ball throw.

“Our young athletes have spent a great deal of time training and preparing within their physical
education classes for this event,” Pierce said, “They are truly looking forward to competing,
having fun, and being part of a truly special program with their friends.”
