Key witness impeachment hearing continues on Day 15 of Pinyon Pines trial
Day 15 of the Pinyon Pines triple murder trial is underway and the jury is nowhere to be found.
That’s due to the continuation of the impeachment hearing for Jeremy Witt, a key witness whose testimony could prove to be particularly crucial in the triple murder trial. The impeachment hearing, which began last week, aims to determine whether or not Witt can be deemed a credible witness, and examines his possible “moral turpitude”.
Last week, sworn testimony Witt provided during a preliminary hearing was read in court, but he never took the stand. Witt evoked the Fifth Amendment so as to not incriminate himself in ongoing cases against him during the impeachment hearing.
Cristin Smith and Robert Pape are both charged with three counts of first-degree murder with special circumstance allegations of taking multiple lives. The 29-year-olds face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of killing Becky Friedli, her mom, Vicki Friedli, and the latter’s boyfriend, Jon Hayward, on the night of Sept. 17, 2006.
Yesterday, three witnesses took the stand; Investigator Ryan Bodmer, who was one of the first of two investigators to interview Jeremy Witt, Jessica Woodbridge, a custodian of records for Bank of America who provided insight into Robert Pape’s bank activity around the time of the murders, and Sara Honaker, the ex-wife of Robert Pape.
During today’s proceedings, the credibility of a witness who was set to testify in the impeachment hearing involving Witt was called into question, essentially creating an impeachment hearing within an impeachment hearing.
