Coachella Valley youth named grand marshals of Palm Springs pride parade
The youth of the Coachella Valley have collectively been named the grand marshals for this year’s Palm Springs Pride Parade, organizers announced today.
Parade organizers with Greater Palm Springs Pride said recent movements initiated by young people across the country inspired the adoption of “Youth Power for Change” as the theme of this year’s pride season, as well as the local parade set for Nov. 4.
A Greater Palm Springs Pride statement says: “While we believe youth who are empowered will change the world, we are reminded that youth have historically been on the front lines of social change, ranging from the civil rights movement to Black Lives Matter. Recently, in response to the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, youth leadership emerged across the country and created national marches to demand change and end gun violence. They have crafted powerful position statements, organized school walkouts, lobbied politicians and engaged in conversations with elected officials.”
The parade will travel down Palm Canyon Drive throughout the downtown area to the main entrance of the Pride Festival at Museum Way.
