Closing arguments underway in Pinyon Pines triple murder trial

Yesterday, Day 18 of the Pinyon Pines triple murder trial, saw one of the shorter court days since the proceedings began last month.

Cristin Smith and Robert Pape are both charged with three counts of first-degree murder with special circumstance allegations of taking multiple lives. The 29-year-olds face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of killing Becky Friedli, her mom, Vicki Friedli, and the latter’s boyfriend, Jon Hayward, on the night of Sept. 17, 2006.

Proceedings wrapped up yesterday before court had a chance to break for lunch; the morning’s discussions focused on the trial’s policies on cameras in the courtroom. Judge Bernard Schwartz weighed whether or not Dateline would be allowed to film, considering the need for the public to be informed on the trial, but also recognizing the need for consistency when it came to filming policy and the desire to protect the identities of the jurors.

The prosecution also had an opportunity to offer a rebuttal to the defense, but they declined to offer said rebuttal yesterday.

The court day wrapped with jury instructions being read aloud and discussed. Certain instruction were modified during yesterday’s proceedings and certain laws were made clear to the jury so as to guide Katie Widner is in Riverside today with continuing KESQ News Channel 3 & CBS Local 2 team coverage.
