Fate of Pinyon Pines triple murder suspects in hands of jury

Yesterday, John Patrick Dolan, Cristin Smith’s defense attorney, referred to a segment of evidence being used against his client as a “made up narrative.”

Today, Jeff Moore, Robert Pape’s attorney, used similarly fantastical language to refer to the prosecution’s case, ending his closing arguments by calling the whole of it “smoke and mirrors.”

Day 20 of the Pinyon Pines triple murder trial is underway, and the defense has wrapped its closing arguments; now the focus of the proceedings shifts back to the prosecution, with a rebuttal being delivered after the lunch recess. The prosecution originally had the opportunity to offer said rebuttal on Monday but declined.

Cristin Smith, 29, and Robert Pape, 30, are both charged with three counts of first-degree murder with special circumstance allegations of taking multiple lives. They face life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted of killing Becky Friedli, her mom, Vicki Friedli, and the latter’s boyfriend, Jon Hayward, on the night of Sept. 17, 2006.

The case has now been handed over to the jury and deliberations have begun.
