Rogue balloon knocks out power to nearly 2,000 customers

A rogue mylar balloon collided with a power pole in Cathedral City on Saturday afternoon, knocking out power to 1,943 people, said Susan Cox with Southern California Edison.

Cox said electrical wires came down around 1:23 p.m. after a metallic balloon floated up into the air and collided with them. Power was restored to a majority of people by 3:30, however 358 customers are still without service. There was no estimated time of restoration.

The areas effected are within the boundaries Wishing Well Trail, 33 Avenue, Arroyo Vista Road and Ramon Road. Cox said the company wants to remind viewers that balloons should never be released into the air and they urge people to use weights to keep them from floating away.
