Victim identified in deadly hit and run collision
UPDATE: The Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office has identified 65-year-old Elena Ramirez, of Indio, as the victim of Saturday night’s deadly hit and run crash. Police said Ramirez was crossing the street when she was hit by a drunk driver who did not stop to help.
ORIGINAL STORY: A driver police say struck and killed a woman with his car Saturday night in Indio, fled the scene before he was located and arrested by authorities.
Colin Havens, 28, of Palm Springs, was arrested and booked into jail, said Sgt. Dan Marshall of the Indio Police Department.
He has been charged with several felonies, including vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence of alcohol.
The incident happened just before 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Monroe Street and Valencia Avenue, near Miles Avenue. Marshall said Havens was driving a 1988 four-door BMW when he made a left turn from westbound Valencia Street onto southbound Monroe Avenue. He then allegedly struck the woman while she was crossing the street.
The woman, who has not yet been identified, died at the scene. Havens fled without rendering aide to her, said Marshall. Officers later located Havens and his vehicle at Highway 111 and Golf Center Drive in Indio and determined he had been drinking.
Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office and firefighters with CAL FIRE-Riverside responded to the scene where the roadway remained closed until about 6 a.m. for the investigation.
