Cabazon outlets change parking policy following backlash

Last week, the Desert Hills Outlets in Cabazon caught quite a bit of flak; KESQ & CBS Local 2 first reported on the shopping center’s new controversial parking policy. The outlets starting charging $5 to park in the East Village garage, causing customers and employees alike to express their the displeasure.

“People get off here at all different times sometimes at 10 or 11 o’clock at night,” said Felicia Jimenez, an employee at the Outlets. “And it’s a safety issue having to walk to your car alone at night.”

Employees at the outlets organized and put pen to paper en masse, creating a petition that garnered over 3,200 signatures. The protestation, ultimately, led to change.

The Desert Hills Outlets will now allow employees to park on the above-mentioned parking structure’s 4th level from Monday-Friday free of cost. The outlets also plan to offer a shuttle service with water for their employees after their shifts.

But still, employees have their concerns.

“It’s probably not going to help too much because there’s a bunch of stores and a bunch of employees,” said George Patterson, an employee at the Outlets. “And customers are still going to be able to park there as well.” Employees are also concerned because they will not be able to park in the structure on weekends, the busiest time of the week for the Outlets.
