Today, Cal Fire announced a new Fire Chief for Riverside County. Effective immediately, Shawn C. Newman will serve as Riverside County Fire Department Fire Chief and the chief of the Riverside Cal Fire Riverside Unit.
“It is truly my honor and privilege to return to the Riverside Unite as the Fire Chief and support the men and women of Cal Fire and the Riverside County Fire Department who responded to and serve and serve the communities within Riverside County each and every day,” said Newman.
Newman is a veteran of Cal Fire, first coming on board in 1989 as a seasonal fighter for the San Bernardino Unit for five years. In 1994, he went on to be promoted to the position of Firefighter II in the Riverside Unit. Seven years after that, he was promoted to Fire Apparatus Engineer in 2001.
In 2006, he accepted the position of Fire Captain at the Norco Norco and Bautista conservation camps; he would be promoted to Battalion Chief in 2012.
His most recent promotion prior to being named Riverside County Fire Chief came in 2017 when he was promoted to Deputy Chief of the Southern Region Office, just one year after being named Assistant Chief at the very same office.
