Woman convicted in death of stepson still hoping for a new trial

Continuing coverage of a murder trial that started almost 15 years ago with the death of a child. Patricia Brown was found guilty last year of the death of her stepson Deetrick and as News Channel 3’s Alex Cheney reports, the defense team is seeking a retrial and motioned that Brown’s previous defense team did not correctly represent her.

In a banning court room Patricia Brown and her defense team argued that she deserves a new trial. Something her husband Derrick Brown also believes. “We know that the facts were never truly given of my wife’s innocence. At least a new trial if not a dismissal of these charges that should’ve never been in the first place.”

Brown and her family say that her previous defense team in 2016 did not properly represent her, “I feel she did her best but this case was too much for her that’s all ill say about that, we did not get adequate help or adequate assistance we’re a product of bad care,” according to Brown.

Brown and her husband Derrick were first arrested in 2003 in Coachella. Derrick was eventually dismissed from the case, “Its very difficult we’ve been in this journey for a long time and still to be going through this after all these years some have already made judgments which are not true which is part of the reason why I’m dismissed because of the fact is that part of the truth has been given not the full truth.”

And, now heading into the holidays the family is grappling with another year without their mother, “It’s, you can’t really put it into words you know what I mean, the best of Christmas is being with your family and the biggest part of my life is my mother and she’s not here so it’s very hard to deal with,” says Brown’s daughter Jasmine Nyx.

The trial resumes on February 16, 2018 in Indio.
