Palm Desert store donates trailer full of food for Cranston Fire victims

Local desert communities are coming together to help victims of the Cranston Fire.

Many people were forced to throw out hundreds of dollars worth of food after being left without refrigeration for several days. The help center in Idyllwild said a generous donation from valley residents have helped serve hundreds up here on the mountain.

Lady Golf in Palm Desert has been collecting non-perishable food donations since Monday donating a trailer full to the help center.

Coleen Meyer, the executive director at the center, says they’re now able to serve hundreds of families affected by the fire.

“Having that trailer come in today… after hearing days and days of stories of people who were impacted, who had to leave, who spent all their money evacuating, and they can’t pay for their rent, they can’t buy food, Meyer said. “Because of the generosity of so many, that we can keep helping feed our friends and our neighbors.”

The need for food will continue to grow as residents from other mountain communities return home.

“There’s a whole community in Mountain Center that we can’t even help yet. There are so many people down there who lost their house. There’s a whole community of houses that are by the Mountain Center market that we can’t get food to, so that’s something were working with the fire chief on getting food to the people that need it, but once that road opens up, the need for food is going to increase,” Meyer said.

Highway 74 remains closed from the city of Hemet to Lake View Drive and Highway 243 is closed from Lower Saunders Meadow Road to Highway 74.

Lady Golf in Palm Desert, right off Highway 111, will be accepting donations through August. Anyone who donates will receive 15 percent off at their store.
