One arrested, another on the run after breaking into animal shelter and stealing 2 dogs

One man is in jail, the other on the run after breaking into a Twentynine Palms animal shelter and stealing two dogs.

According to a news release by the Sheriff’s Department, Levi Irwin, 20 Irwin and an unidentified man still on the loose are accused of forcing open a door to the Palms-N-Paws Animal Shelter in Twentynine Palms and stealing two pitbulls.

Police say Irwin unlocked the other cages, which allowed all the dogs to run free. Two dogs ran from the building, and have not been located. Two other dogs were severely injured in a fight after they were let loose.

Detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department arrested Irwin in his residence. A search warrant was served at Irwin’s residence, and evidence was recovered.

Irwin was booked at the Morongo Basin Jail for burglary and animal cruelty.

The other suspect and stolen dogs have not been located. Anyone with information related to this investigation is asked to contact the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Morongo Basin Station at (760)366-4175. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous may contact We-Tip at 1-888-78-CRIME.
