Well in the Desert’s “Hot Lunch Program” helping those in need during the summer heat

Summer heat makes for very dangerous conditions for the valley’s homeless. Many try to take refuge in parks. Well in the Desert has a program to help them find food and a place to cool off.

The organization shuttles participants around the desert to provide cooling centers, showers, hot meals, and takeaway bags.

“The sack lunches are good and I’m happy because I live right behind the church and every time I come here I’m happy because I don’t even have food at my house,” one participating child said.

Curtis Cannon moved here a year and a half ago from Texas. He says the spirit of volunteerism in Coachella Valley is unique.

“People are very inclined to help. There’s a real strong sense of volunteerism so wherever you look and whatever facet of the community,” said Curtis Cannon, a volunteer for the organization.

Offering a helping hand during a peak time of the summer when temperatures climb dangerously high.

“I see a lot of people that are very grateful, they come in, and the ones we see on a regular basis every day are very grateful for everything,” said Wendy Garnatz, a Client Relations associate at Well in the Desert.
