DHS teen arrested for alleged Palm Springs carjacking
A 16-year-old Desert Hot Springs resident has been arrested on suspicion of carjacking and reckless police evasion in connection with an alleged early-morning Palm Springs carjacking.
At approximately 6:40 a.m., Palm Springs Police Department officers were dispatched to the 100 block of S. Farrell Drive after receiving a call of a reported stolen vehicle. The female victim reported that a man wearing a scarf over his face threatened her with a knife and took her vehicle.
A patrolling PSPD detective was notified by dispatch of the report and was able to find the stolen vehicle “quickly”, according to a PSPD news release. Additional PSPD units arrived on the scene to assist, and at that time, the suspect sped off in the vehicle to attempt to avoid arrest.
The suspect traveled onto a dirt road and eventually crashed the vehicle near Mission Lakes Boulevard and Little Morongo Road. The vehicle sustained minor damage during the incident.
The suspect was then detained by officers from PSPD and DHSPD. He was then transported to Palm Springs.
The knife which was believed to be used in the carjacking was recovered inside the stolen vehicle.
The incident is being investigated as a “carjacking (PC 215) and felony reckless evading peace officers (CVC 2800.2)” according to a PSPD news release.
