Stokes to Lopez touchdown in final seconds wins high school football play of the week

Palm Desert was tied with Beaumont 21-21 in the final seconds on Friday night. That was until senior quarterback Carter Stokes and wide receiver Devin Lopez connected on a deep ball to win the game for the Aztecs.

Stokes and Lopez’s connection saved the game for the Aztecs who got out to a 13-0 lead to, but then trailed 21-13 to start the 3rd quarter with a home loss looming.

Luckily, in the end, it all worked out for PDHS football.

“We had streaks going down the outside and our coach said to throw it up to one of the big guys. I trusted Devin because he probably has the best hands on our team and I gave him a shot and he took advantage of it, said Stokes.

“We talked about it before and he decided he wanted to throw it to me and I saw the ball coming and I just know they taught me to go up for it, high-point it, grab it and be strong and bring it down – and that’s what I did,” said Lopez.

Lopez is a first-year football player, who was known more for his ability on the basketball court. But I think that’s all changed now.
