Classes canceled at three Thermal schools for next two days following fire

A fire at Toro Canyon Middle School located on the 86000 block of Avenue 66 in Thermal was contained around 2:48 p.m. today. Arriving fire crews located the fire contained within an electrical room in the building.

The building was de-energized shortly after the fire crews arrived.

A notice was sent out to parents informing them classes have been canceled for Desert Mirage High School, Las Palmitas Elementary, and Toro Canyon on Thursday and Friday. The schools will be reevaluated on Sunday to determine if there will be classes on Monday.

One person was initially trapped in an elevator for about an hour but has since been rescued.

15 firefighters and three engine companies responded to the scene. Cooperating agencies included American Medical Response, Imperial Irrigation District, and Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department.
