Driver airlifted to hospital after crashing under semi-truck

A driver was airlifted to an area hospital with serious injuries after a sedan ran into a large truck on the I-10 east of Indio.

Initial reports indicate the vehicle ran into the back of a semi-truck, wedging underneath the truck on an uphill area of the road just before 11 a.m. on Sunday morning.

A spokesperson from the Riverside County Fire Department said the sedan became trapped in the wreckage and firefighters had to rescue the individual.

The crash occurred on the eastbound side of the freeway about five miles east of Dillon Rd., according to the Riverside County Fire Department. The crash caused traffic backup for hours.

Lanes reopened around 12:45 p.m.
