Xavier Prep students injured in rollover crash honored at school’s football game

The Xavier Prep football team is playing for more than just pride tonight, the school plans to honor the three students, including two players on the football team, who were injured in a crash last Saturday and continue to recover.

According to friends of family members, the students possibly drove over a raised bump too quickly causing the car to flip. Jalen Rushin is recovering from serious injuries at Loma Linda Medical Center. Kai Killebrew is just out of back surgery. Matthew Shupp has been released from the hospital.

The three students will be recognized in different ways:

Killebrew, a wide receiver on the team will had his jersey number printed on the game ball tonight and brought out to the field.

Shupp, a Freshman, walked out with the captains tonight before the game and had his jersey number painted on the field.

Rushin, a basketball player, also had his jersey number painted on the field.

“It’s huge, I’m really close with both boys and the third one who’s doing alright, we have a good family here it’s amazing, I think that’s what got most of our kids through the last few days,” said Theresa Cervello, a mother of a player on the team.

“I think it really made the team grow stronger together. I think they’ve really been there for everyone especially in support of Shupp and Jay and Kai as you can see the numbers on the field everyone has full support for all of them right now,” said Merrick Groat, a student at Xavier Prep.

Mark Campbell, Xavier Prep Athletic Director, says he is very appreciative of the community coming together to support the three students.

“Our community is resilient and strong, we kind of rally together and our focus is to keep both boys in our prayers as well as their families, we want to get them back at home with us,” Campbell told KESQ & CBS Local 2.
