Valley organizations work to get out the vote ahead of registration deadline
Organizations across the valley are working to get out the vote ahead of the Oct. 22 voter registration deadline.
Secretary of State Alex Padilla reported that a record-breaking 19 million people are registered this year, nearly 76 percent of those who are eligible.
A rep for Democrats of the Desert, based in Cathedral City, said they have registered more than 13,000 voters this election season.
“It’s very important that people understand their vote counts, it means something,” said Elle Kurpiewski, political director of the Democratic Headquarters of the Desert. “And in this election, voting means something.”
The Republican Organizing Committee did not have specific statistics available, but said the number of people they’ve registered is in the thousands.
And TODEC Legal Center, or Training Occupational Development Educating Communities, based in Coachella, works to register immigrant communities including new U.S. citizens, hosting voter training workshops and helping to make the process as simple as possible for new voters.
“The main theme of our campaign is my voice, my vote, my power,” said Maria Quezada of TODEC Legal Center. “It’s just to inform people that voting is the only way that people can actually make their voice heard.”
They said they have also registered thousands of voters.
So how do you get registered before that Oct. 22 deadline?
You can find a voter registration table at malls or shopping plazas around the valley. Or register online at Vote.org to streamline the process. You can also register at any DMV, library or post office.
And if you’ve registered in the past, you’ll only need to re-register if you’ve moved addresses, changed your name, or want to change your party affiliation.
