Parents concerned after fights recorded at La Quinta HS

Parents are concerned for their children’s safety after fights at La Quinta High School were recorded and shared on social media.

“If anything happens to your child if they’re bullied or taken advantage of, to report it immediately,” said Colleen Waters, the mother of a La Quinta High School student who was recently attacked on campus.

Waters showed us cell phone video of her daughter being attacked, which she said shows two girls pull her hair, punch her face and stomp on her throat.

“The only ones that intervened were the other students,” Waters said “And had they not, she could have died.”

The Desert Sands Unified School District said all the students involved in the altercation received appropriate discipline.

Waters shared an email from La Quinta High School’s principal that says, in part, that school leaders are hosting a meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 10 to discuss safety concerns.

“Personally, I’m disgusted with it,” said Thomas Waters, Colleen’s husband, who works as a coach for the La Quinta High School’s football and track teams.

Thomas Waters said there are not enough security guards to handle La Quinta High School’s increasing student body.

“Lets say there’s five security guards on campus and 2,500 students. That’s 500 students for one person to watch,” he said. “I don’t think that’s fair for one person to watch.”

The Desert Sands Unified School District said it will continue its investigation into the altercation and will look at the video from other cameras from other angles.

Colleen and Thomas Waters have filed a police report against the girls who they said attacked their daughter.
