16-year-old dies from gunshot wounds at Arabian Gardens Mobile Home Park

Indio police are working non-stop to find the person who shot and killed a young male.

On Friday night around 9:45 p.m., Indio police responded to an incident at the Arabian Gardens Mobile Home Park after gunshots were heard in the area. When IPD officers arrived at the mobile home park, they found a young male who had several gunshot wounds. According to police, the victim died at the scene.

Monday evening, family identified the victim as 16-year-old Gerardo Mendez. According to his sister, Mendez was murdered Friday night in front of a family member’s home while celebrating an aunt’s birthday.

While officers were responding to the gunshots at the mobile home park, an adult male arrived at John F. Kennedy Hospital with several gunshot wounds. According to police, that man is in serious condition. Family said the man shot was Mendez’s cousin.

Neighbors who heard the gunshots spoke out to KESQ & CBS Local 2.

“It was like six pops; six shots,” Aurelio Sandoval said.

Though Indio police have not identified the victim, Sandoval says he was a teenager.

“He was a little kid; like 15 years old,” he said.

Police are actively investigating the case and asking for help from the public. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact IPD (760-391-4057), or to remain anonymous, please contact Valley Crime Stoppers at 760-341-STOP (7867).
