California Lt. Gov. and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom held a pre-election town hall at the Mizell Senior Center in Palm Springs today, one of several campaign events he is attending throughout Southern California this weekend.
Arriving in his campaign bus, Newsom took the time to enjoy Palm Springs’ sunshine.
“My kinda weather … this is nice,” Newsom told KESQ & CBS Local 2.

Greeted by an exuberant crowd, Newsome spoke about a number of major issues.

On the migrant caravan making its way through Central America:
“It’s a made-up crisis. They’re over 1000 miles away, they’re moving about 20 miles a day,” Newsom said. “it’s disgraceful because it demeans other people, poor people, people struggling, people for the grace of God anyone be in their circumstance and all they’re looking for is new beginnings.”
On Proposition 6. the gas tax repeal on Tuesday’s ballot:
“You can’t get something for nothing and our traditional mechanism to invest in roads comes from the pump from the gas tax,” Newsom said. “Finally this state is gonna fix its infrastructure, or not.”

On standing up to President Donald Trump:
Trump had referred to Newsom as a “clown” during a speech in September.
Newsom fired back on Twitter, referring to Trump as Pennywise, the clown from the horror movie/book “IT.”

“He’s not attacking me, I’m just a conduit. He’s attacking our diverse communities in this state and I want folks to know in this state I’m gonna have their back,” Newsome told KESQ & CBS Local 2. “You wanna attack us… we punch above our weight and I’m happy to stand tall and firm.”
Newsom’s Republican opponent John Cox is also touring Southern California, meeting with voters in San Diego today.

After the Palm Springs town hall, Newsom was on his way to Los Angeles after a brief as he continues his final push in his run for Governor ahead of Tuesday’s election.
Despite all that, Newsom says we could see more of him in the Coachella Valley.
“Not just working, maybe more hiking up those hills. (Pointing towards hills behind Palm Springs) That’s one of my favorite hikes literally right up there,” Newsom said.
