Escaped mountain lion put down after killing several animals at Yucca Valley home

A mountain lion who escaped from a chicken coop on Monday, after killed several animals, returned to the same home and killed several livestock.

According to the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department, deputies received reports of a Mountain Lion trapped inside of a chicken coop Monday night at a home on the 5900 block of Avalon Avenue. The mountain lion had killed several animals before the deputies successfully chased the lion from the area that night.

Deputies say the mountain lion returned to the same home Tuesday night, breaking through the roof of the livestock enclosure and attacking livestock. When deputies arrived, they said they found the mountain lion still inside the enclosure among several injured and dead animals. Deputies were unsuccessful in their numerous attempts to chase the mountain lion from the enclosure and the attack on the livestock continued.

Authorities determined that the mountain lion posed an immediate and ongoing threat to the safety of the homeowner, his livestock, and other people and animals living in the area.

After consulting with Fish and Wildlife officers it was determined that the mountain lion had to be put down to end the attack and prevent further loss of life, as no other less intrusive or harmful means were immediately available. Fish and Wildlife officers took possession of the lion’s remains.

Authorities believe this mountain lion is responsible for several other animal attacks reported in the area over the past several months.
