Highway 111 crash reportedly triggered by scooter running red light
A three-vehicle collision in Rancho Mirage was triggered by a motorized scooter rider running a red light, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The accident, which was reported at 1:09 p.m., happened near the intersection of Highway 111 and Library Way.
Upon arrival, deputies investigated and found that a rider of a motorized scooter ran a red light while turning onto Library Way from Highway 111, and was struck by a vehicle. The rider was ejected, and the scooter was then run over by a third vehicle.
The scooter rider was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. No one else sustained injuries, and the riders of both vehicles remained on scene and were cooperative with law enforcement.
Drugs or alcohol do not appear to have played a role in the collision at this time.
The investigation is active. HWY 111 was closed after the accident, but has since reopened.
