PSPD to honor fallen officers for Peace Officers Memorial Day

Four Palm Springs officers killed in the line of duty will be honored Wednesday as services take place throughout the country on Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Fallen officers Gale Eldridge, Lyle Larrabee, Jose Gilbert Vega, and Lesley Zerebny will all be honored at the memorial ceremony set to begin at 5 p.m. in front of Palm Spring police headquarters at 200 S Civic Dr., according to Palm Springs spokeswoman Amy Blaisdell.

“Their families and their PSPD family have never forgotten and remember their sacrifice every day,” a Facebook post from PSPD said.

Peace Officers Memorial Day was first signed into existence in 1962 and is celebrated every year on May 15, according to PSPD, which also coincides with Police Week. Memorial services are held throughout the country to honor fallen police.

As the officers are memorialized, the trial continues for John Felix Hernandez, who is accused of shooting Zerebny and Vega from inside his family home in the 2700 block of Cypress Avenue on Oct. 8, 2016, killing both.

Jurors are expected to be instructed Wednesday, with closing arguments slotted for Thursday in the trial.
