Holiday traffic in full swing heading out of the valley
News Channel 3 is keeping an eye out on holiday traffic.
According to AAA, the worst time to be on the road this Thanksgiving is Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
As of 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, we are seeing slow moving traffic on the I-10 and CA-60 heading west out of the valley.
We spoke with some travelers as they were gassing up before heading out of town.
“I’m going up Highway 74 to see some family," Jonathan Anthony told News Channel 3.
“I’m headed to Carlsbad to go to my in-laws house,” Sarina Sebt said.
One traveler tells us he’s preparing for any situation on the road.
“I’ve got chains, an extra jack, flash lights, flares," Anthony said.
While roads start getting crowded, not everyone is looking to leave home for Thanksgiving.
“I’ll be spending Thanksgiving at home," Francisca Lopez said. "My family is out in Texas so traveling is kind of hard to go out there right now during the holiday season so we’re just going to be at home with the family we have here," Lopez added.
Even still, AAA says over 49 million people will hit the road this year for Thanksgiving.
This is the second highest Thanksgiving travel volume since 2000.
California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer, Jackie Quintero gives us an important reminder before we hit the road.
“Remember that you’re not only driving for yourself out there," Quintero said. "You’re also driving for your family and your loved ones. There’s people around you that may have family and loved ones as well so instead of sending that text or looking at that text or being distracted in any way make sure you just focus on the road to get home to your loved ones and everyone can make it home for the holidays,” she added.
