Val Kilmer movie filming underway in Coachella Valley

Filming for the new movie "Pay Dirt" is now underway throughout the Coachella Valley. The movie is directed by Christian Sesma, who describes it as a crime heist thriller.

Val Kilmer and Luke Goss are both starring in the film.

“I play the role of Damien. He’s kind of a crew leader," actor Luke Goss said.

He's taking on the role of a parolee just released from prison. It isn't long before he's back in the game, doing one last job in the desert.

Actress Mirth Michelle has taken on the role of Layla Lopez, Damien's parole officer.

“But later in the film we’re going to find out she’s more than that," Michelle said.

Val Kilmer is set to play the sheriff.

Today the cast and crew were out filming at Harv's Car Wash in Palm Desert. The night before scenes were also shot at Coachella Bar off Grapefruit Boulevard. Filming began last week and is set to go on throughout the Coachella Valley.

“Coachella’s been amazing," Director Christian Sesma said.

Sesma is a Palm Springs native. He says it's special being able to shoot in his hometown.

" [...] local entities, businesses and restaurants and locations have really come together to support us and I think that’s the important part-- that we are bringing back to Hollywood, and saying this is a viable place to shoot and it always has been," Sesma said.

Nearly 70 percent of the crew is made up of Coachella Valley natives.

"For us to be back here and making a movie here in our backyard in our hometowns, it means the world," Actor and producer Mike Hatton said.

Coachella Mayor, Steven Hernandez is also weighing in. He released a statement saying:

"We know that the movie industry provides for thousands of jobs in California. And to have a little piece of that in Coachella gives us all optimism that more opportunities are on the way!"

Filming is expected to continue through December.

If you'd like to be a part of the film now is your chance. Extras will be needed for a "Day of the Dead" parade that will be recreated in downtown Coachella. Extras will meet at 5 p.m. at City Hall on Saturday, December 21st. They're encouraged to wear Day of the Dead attire as well as festive face paint to bring on life of the tradition.

The event will go on between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on 6th Street between Grapefruit Blvd and Vine Street.
