Police Offer Safety Tips For Summer Travel
Earl and Joan Hall are locking up their house as they prepare to travel back to northern California.
They’re normally in their RV, but this year they decided to stay in this Palm Desert home.
They say they’ll have an extra set of eyes on it while they’re away.
“We’re gonna bring all our things in off the patio. Keep it inside and have a couple family members and friends checking on the house regularly. My sister will be here at least weekly,” said Joan Hall.
Police say preparing for long trips, or short vacations, begins at home.
Simple things like locking your doors, making sure your burglar alarm works and having an updated contact list, so if someone breaks in, police know who to call.
“I’ve dealt with that numerous times where we’ll show up to a residents that maybe isn’t secured or possibly a burglary and we can not get a hold of the residents to properly secure the home or we don’t know what’s been taken,” said Deputy Angela Hafer, with the Rancho Mirage Police Department.
Deputy Hafer says just because your home is locked up, doesn’t mean safety stops when you hit the road.
She says you should remove any electronics from your car or move them out of plain sight. things like your GPS, any wires or cords you may have, as well as your car stereo.
Officers say safety in your home-away-from-home is just as important.
Ed Dyer and his grandchildren plan to go to Lake Tahoe this summer.
They’re staying at a time share.
Dyer says it’s a little safer than a hotel.
“It’s more controlled they know who’s coming and the people are owners so they take better care of things and watch over things more.”
Police say many of these tips are a matter of common sense.
