Big Rig Rolls Across Interstate

A big rig driver is lucky to be alive, after falling asleep at the wheel.

The big rig overturned on Interstate 10 Thursday morning near the Chiriaco Summit.

The California Highway Patrol got a call around 6 a.m. of a big rig that had overturned and rolled multiple times across the highway.

The driver was heading eastbound on Interstate 10 when the truck rolled over — across the westbound lanes and on to the shoulder. Officers say the driver dozed off, then woke up and overcorrected, causing the truck to roll.

The driver was trapped inside for about an hour, but was safely rescued with only minor injuries.

A hazardous materials team was called out to the scene, as about 50 to 100 gallons of diesel fuel were leaking from the truck.
