Indio Child Shot In Crossfire Upgraded To Serious Condition

A 5-year-old boy shot in a car-to-car shooting in Indio was upgraded from critical to serious condition on Monday, police said.

A bullet hit the boy in the upper abdomen about 5:45 p.m. Monday when people in two cars were shooting at one another while racing down John Nobles Avenue. Police have declined to name him.

The boy was in his front yard in the 46500 block of Monte Verde Street — about a block from the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival — when he was hit by one of about six shots fired between two cars, Indio police spokesman Ben Guitron said.

After surgery yesterday, his condition was upgraded, he said.

“From what it sounds like, there is a lot better hope than there was yesterday,” Guitron said

Witnesses said one suspect vehicle was a blue pickup truck, and the other was a dark-colored Chevrolet Blazer with tinted windows. So far, no arrests have been announced.

Anyone with more information was asked to call the Indio police at (760) 391-4057, or Valley Crime Stoppers at (760) 341-STOP.

The boy lives in a gang injunction zone. Though the shooting has the hallmarks of a gang attack, police were not saying if they believed the suspects were gang members.
