’90 Days Of Summer Relief’ Campaign Launched By Shelter

Marcos Carrillo knows what a difference a bottle of water makes for someone out on the streets.

He was homeless at one time.

“They [homeless] may sometimes refuse a water, but they really want it,” he said.

Carrillo now works as the driver for the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission’s latest campaign called “90 Days of Summer Relief.” Staff and volunteers will distribute hats, long-sleeved shirts, lip balm, sunblock and water.

“The elements out here in the desert are really harsh on people,” said Greg Fisher, CVRM Development Director. “So many people are hurting because of the economy.

CVRM will target various locations throughout the desert where homeless people tend to gather: under bridges, in parks and behind abandoned buildings.

The outreach will be done every three weeks.

The homeless have no idea about the campaign. “It’s going to be a refreshing surprise,” Carrillo said.
