Panel Releases Proposed Redistricting Maps

An independent citizens panel has released its draft of new maps for California’s congressional and legislative districts in a process that could reshape California’s political landscape.

The California Citizens Redistricting Commission released preliminary maps Friday, giving voters their first chance to see new boundaries not drawn by politicians interested in protecting their seats. Californians established the commission in 2008 in response to gerrymandering by lawmakers that preserved districts for incumbents and the parties.

Dr. Gabino Aguirre, a commissioner from Ventura County, says the maps seek to balance the needs of all Californians, giving them an equal political voice.

He says the panel paid no attention to incumbents or party registration figures. Instead, commissioners focused on grouping communities by geography, ethnicity and economic interests.

Final maps will be certified in August.
