Alleged Phone ‘Scammer’ Seeks Money

Someone using a phone number based in Palm Springs is trying to scam people all over the country, according to some of the people he’s contacted.

Phone calls were made to places from Texas, Utah and Sacramento.

The caller goes by the alias of “Steven Smith” or “Brian Davis” and calls victims asking for money. He claims they will be arrested if they don’t pay.

The alleged scammer claims to be with Carlson Law Firm in San Diego. The managing partner at that law firm, Dan Carlson, received two calls from victims, and he quick to say he had no affiliation with those scamming calls.

“I had really thought that this might just be a few,” he said. “I’m surprised. This guy apparently isn’t stopping, and he’s making a lot of connections, so it really does concern me.”

Sgt. Walter Combs with the Palm Springs Police Department says there are red flags that warn that a caller is trying to scam you.

“If they’re telling you they need money right now, and they need you to wire it to them via MoneyGram, Western Union, those generally mean that business has some issues and it may not be legitimate,” he says.
