Indio Shocks La Quinta with Wild Buzzer Beater… Friday Prep Basketball Recaps
BOYS:
INDIO 75, La Quinta 72 (F)
Abram Montoya can add his name to the list of greatest finishes in Indio High School athletics history. Montoya banked in a buzzer beater from just inside half-court as time expired to lift the Rajahs over La Quinta. An improbable finish to say the least. Montoya, who’s grandfather passed away earlier this week, was supposed to be at the funeral, but opted to stay and help his other family… his team. Naturally, he dedicated his heroics to his grandpa. The Rajahs have moved within a half game of third place in the latest Desert Valley League standings. Friday’s win dramatically helps their playoff chances.
Xavier Prep 46, PALM DESERT 75 (F)
Robert Romero scored 23 points to lead Palm Desert over the Saints. The Aztecs got back on the winning track after Tuesday’s home loss to first place Palm Springs. Palm Desert needs a small miracle to catch the Indians in the DVL standings, but can rest assured of a solid playoff seeding in the approaching C.I.F. bracket. The Aztecs next host head coach Don Brady’s alma mater, Palos Verdes, in a non-conference game on Saturday night (2/4/2012, 7 p.m.)
GIRLS:
La Quinta 26, INDIO 74 (F)
The Lady Rajahs remained perfect in Desert Valley League play with a blowout of the Blackhawks. Indio celebrated halftime in style by retiring the jerseys of three outstanding basketball alumnus.
