Modernism Week Kicks Off With Art Show

Lovers of all things modern are converging on Palm Springs for modernism week.

A lot of traffic at the Palm Springs Convention Center this weekend. Many looking to get a glimpse of this year’s “Modernism Show and Sale.” It’s just one of the nearly one hundred events planned for Modernism Week 2012.

“I am here to see the best of the best, the best collection of mid-century modern probably in the country,” said Sheri Johnson, of Indian Wells.

The three-day show features 75 exhibitors — displaying mid-century art, furniture, clothing, and jewelry. You can find stunning pieces ranging anywhere from $20 to $20,000.

Giving folks the chance to take modernism home with them.

“I got all kinds of ideas which I’m trying to implement in our 70s home.” said Johnson.

“Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s still really fun to look at the stuff.” said Bruce Rockwell, of Pasadena.

Now in it’s 7th year, Modernism Week has become a cultural phenomenon, attracting modern enthusiasts from around the valley and beyond.

“People are here from New York, New Zealand…people have come from all around the world to see this.” said Gordon Merkle, a Modernism Week spokesperson.

The show also highlighted the idea of recycling and re-purposing architecture, art, and design. Some say Palm Springs is the place to do that.

“People have done wonderful jobs redoing and renewing, it’s become the place to see modernism.”

The Modernism Show and Sale runs through Monday at the convention center. Admission for all three days is 15 dollars.
