Flying Doctors Treat Hundreds Of Valley Patients
They’re low income, without health insurance and in need of medical attention. That’s why dozens of dentists, optometrists, and doctors flew into Thermal to help treat hundreds of valley patients at Desert Mirage High School on Saturday.
“For most of these patients, this is the only care they’ll get,” said Larry Tabor, the dental coordinator of Flying Doctors.
This group of “Flying Doctors” offer free medical services around Southern California — including mammograms, dental work, and eye exams.
They set up their mobile shop twice a year here in the desert. Their make-shift clinic is one that hundreds of people depend on.
“My son had a lot of rash all over his body. They give free medicine for him so that’s why I’m here,” said Gloria Gonzalez, of Coachella.
Many participants also looked to take home a free car seat for their kids and even a new pair of sneakers. Local organizers said 48 percent of the eastern valley is without healthcare insurance but that’s not all.
“There’s a transportation issue, less doctors per ratio of how many people need to be treated,” said Lucy Moreno, the local organizer of Flying Doctors.
Regardless of any financial or health issues, Moreno says they don’t turn anyone away.
“We had people here from Desert Hot Springs, Blythe, and Palm Springs. No one’s asked questions, it’s just first come first served,” said Moreno.
The event wasn’t just about treating patients, doctors also worked to promote healthy eating and active living.
“I hope they continue to have this, so we can take advantage of the help that’s out there,” said Martinez.
