Rock climber dies after falling 30 feet

A 27-year-old woman died Tueday in a fall during a rock climbing and rappelling demonstration northeast of Idyllwild, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.

Karen Gose of Chino fell during a descent from a rock face around 12:44 p.m. at Suicide Ridge, a hiking and rock climbing area northeast of Idyllwild in Mount San Jacinto State Park.

Firefighters and members of the Idyllwild Fire Protection District reached Gose shortly after 2 p.m. and she was taken to a hospital by helicopter, said Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann.

She was declared dead at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs at 3:21 p.m., according to the sheriff-coroner.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death.
