Wildfire stopped near Whitewater Canyon

Firefighters reported stopping the progress of a wildfire west of Palm Springs near Whitewater Canyon Thursday morning.

The flames were reported at 5:42 a.m., near Tamarack Road and Whitewater Canyon Road.

A Cal-Fire statement said the fire was approximately 9 acres in size as of 6:21 a.m., and burning in medium fuels at a slow rate. Later reports suggested the fire’s progress was stopped and firefighters planned to mop up for two to three hours.

Winds in the area were reported at 20 m.p.h. The flames were burning against the winds.

No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened.

No evacuations were reported and no word on a cause.
