Hikers discover human skull in open desert

Riverside County Sheriff’s Detectives were combing through the desert area near Thousand Palms Canyon Road and Dillon Road after a hiker said he discovered a human skull with a gunshot wound.

Thunder Gibb says he was with two family members hiking in the remote desert area Monday when they came across the find.

Investigators arrived on scene and took over the area, blocking off a wide area with crime tape.

A Sheriffs department spokesman said the cause of death was unknown at that time.

Gibb told News Channel 3 the skull had a small hole in its back he thought could have been from a bullet wound. He said the front of the skull was missing.

An autopsy is pending.
